When kids sit all day, their mental and physical health is in danger.
Celebrating 5 Years of Active Kids in Canada!
The BOKS journey in Canada started in 2014 with our first school from the Toronto Catholic School District. From there schools quickly joined the BOKS movement from Coquitlam to Kamloops and now from coast to coast to coast with all 10 provinces and 3 territories getting kids active with BOKS. We could not let this milestone pass without recognizing the trainers and students who brought it to life in their communities. September saw us celebrating across the country with BOKStacle courses and Burst challenges. We can’t wait to see what the next 5 years will bring!
To celebrate FIVE years of BOKS in Canada, we would like to share with you five new Bursts to try with your students.
5 Years Later – What our community has to say
Trainer at Centennial Park School, Quebec
“BOKS has made a huge impact on so many children within our school community. When I talk about BOKS, the kids actually light up. Do we have it today? Is it our turn? When are we starting BOKS? Can we do it every day? Ah, is it already time to leave? These are questions asked by all grade levels.
BOKS has become a “tradition”, in a sense that when we have new students our kids will say “You don’t know about BOKS?!” “You’re going to love it!” The best part of BOKS for me, is to see the sheer enjoyment of the kids participating in the activities. I love the fact that they feel empowered to organize, set-up, plan out, show leadership, and engage with those in need and to try new things. No pressure, no evaluation, just teamwork.”
Superintendent of Education
Toronto Catholic District School Board
“Schools that engage in the BOKS program have increased student engagement and participation in fun, fitness and wellness initiatives inspired by BOKS! The fabulous activities motivate the entire community to focus on healthy, active living and wellness. We recognized the impact of physical activity and student engagement on the students’ ability to focus on learning in the classroom, increase energy, and improve overall learning skills. We saw BOKS as an exciting, innovative addition to our active participation in physical fitness activities with our students and we were thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful initiative. Incorporating the BOKS program into the daily physical activity initiatives at the school improves physical, social and emotional well-being of students and the benefits are observed in and out of the classroom!”

What do you like the most about the BOKS program:
I like all the activities and the games where there is running involved! I like tuck jumps and relay races. I really enjoy being a Junior Trainer and helping our BOKS trainers.
You have been doing the BOKS program for 5 years! What did the BOKS program give you?
Before starting BOKS, I was quickly out of breath when we were going outside to run. Now, I feel so much better when running and also, when playing soccer.
What are your best memories from the last 5 years with BOKS?
When we were going to run outside of the school yard; on the baseball field, doing the stairs at the Chalet des Loisirs and in the streets around the school.
Bursts are a quick and easy way to get students active throughout the day and our teachers and trainers are putting them to use daily. BOKS is ensuring teachers have the resources they need with over 250 Bursts, more than 60 videos, weekly emails and new training launched in August to ensure this program has the greatest impact in your school communities.
